Abstract
A condensed version of a 270-page report is provided, looking to the future needs of the profession for research. The study is a part of the total ASCE research needs study being conducted at Colorado State University. Transportation is described as a subsystem, or part, of most social and economic activities. Priorities for research are traced to broad priorities to advance the quality of life. Research for new transport systems are incorporated within specific social goals. The research needs for producing more efficient modes is presented, based primarily upon ASCE committee reports. The needs of disciplines that are fundamental to transportation, such as structures, engineering mechanics, soil mechanics, etc. are also presented. The funds required are estimated at $1 billion per year, plus $200,000,000 annually for facilities and equipment. Manpower needs are estimated to be 20,000 professionals.
