What Have Transit Demonstrations Really Shown?

Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 97, Issue 2

Abstract

The results of a variety of selected federal mass transportation demonstration projects are analyzed, and a number of common results identified which are considered of some significance to future mass transportation planning. Emphasis is placed on public behavior, and response to changes, in mass transportation systems. A total of 25 projects, involving almost $18,000,000 in federal grants, dealing with both rail and bus experiments in a variety of geographic areas were analyzed in detail. The principal common findings are outlined under broad topical headings including feeder buses, minibuses, express service, transfers, parking, fares and deficits, level of service and ridership. A list of the projects selected for analysis appears as an appendix.
