Traffic Volume Characteristics on Urban Freeways
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 97, Issue 1
Abstract
Various traffic characteristics for urban freeways are derived from data recorded at 15 urban locations in 1965 and 19 urban locations in 1963. This study was directed toward developing methodology for estimating traffic volumes. Short-time peak volumes are used to estimate volumes of longer duration such as for a 24-hr period. These expansion factors are developed on a directional basis. Other characteristics such as beginning times of peak periods as a function of urban size are examined. Empirical lane distributions on multilane facilities are developed.
