Transportation R&D by Private Enterprise

Abstract
Transportation oriented research and development performed by manufacturing industry includes: (1) Product improvement and component development; (2) basic research and new system development; and (3) research sponsored or initiated by government. Rail automation is used as an example of a complete, industry sponsored developmental cycle, starting from basic research on electronic computers and automation concepts, progressing to operational rail automation hardware installed in new transit systems and remotely controlled locomotives. The intermediate steps included an investigation of rail automation needs, specification of requirements, design, development, and testing of prototype and then full scale equipments, establishing new subsystem development requirements, and designing and developing the new subsystems over a 15-yr. period of time. A brief summary of current ground transportation R&D opportunities is also presented.
