Abstract

Working stresses for timber are developed from average test values for clear wood by applying factors for normal variability, indeterminacy of stress analysis, natural strength-reducing characteristics present in structural timbers, and duration of loading. Normally, no allowance is made for fatigue-that is, to provide for the possibility that failure may result from an accumulation of cyclic stressing during the life of the structure. This paper summarizes information now available on fatigue of wood and investigates the adequacy of design based on present-day working stresses with respect to fatigue.
