Use of Models to Study Ground-Water Problems
Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 125, Issue 1
Abstract
When adverse field conditions preclude a direct field investigation of a ground-water problem, models can often be utilized to advantage in the determination of directions of flow, velocities, location of hydraulic divides, and in forecasting conditions that may occur in the future. Two types of models, electric analog plotter and hydraulic, were found satisfactory for the investigation of a ground-water problem located in an unconfined aquifer.
The electric analog plotter was somewhat limited by the necessity of assuming a system of a single density, but otherwise it offered valuable detailed information on the flow patterns. The hydraulic model, while operating satisfactorily with different density liquids, also allowed the study of non-equilibrium conditions. This enabled the introduction of a time scale that made it possible to forecast future events that would be difficult to obtain by mathematical analysis. The two models checked each other in their field of mutual results. This demonstrates their usefulness in the investigation of ground-water problems.
