Pipeline Field Welding and Quality Control Methods
Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 125, Issue 1
Abstract
Pipeline laying practice in the United States has progressed from field experience methods to recognized engineering technology. The development of pipeline procedures and practices is presented. Speed, mobility, skill and inventiveness of the pipeline men in general characterize pipeline work. Most pipeline equipment is developed in the field. Line-up clamps are an outstanding example of such equipment.
Procedures and developments in welding are indicated and testing methods are described. Nondestructive testing includes radiography, magnetic, supersonic, dye penetrant, and pressure testing. Radiographic inspection has helped greatly to improve welding.
Technical investigations into new materials and processes present a real challenge to the engineering profession. Codes and standards control all phases of pipeline work from the material being used to the installation of the line.
