Abstract
Six 15-gal laboratory, mechanical composters (batch-type) for determining the criteria for the high-rate composting of organic wastes a re described herein. Physical and chemical tests for indicating the degree of decomposition during composting arc outlined, and typical results are presented. Optimum stirring and aeration rates, as well as the percentage of moisture in the initial charge, arc presented for the laboratory units. The correlation of carbon dioxide and moisture production with the temperature of the compost is shown, together with the respiratory quotient for the decomposition.
