Engineering Biotechnology in Occupational Health

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 121, Issue 1

Abstract

The advance of technology during the twentieth century has produced machines and mechanical processes the capabilities of which exceed those of the men who operate them. Consequently, the problem of maintaining maximum productive effectiveness of the working population has become of major engineering significance. The author outlines the fundamentals of occupational health, physiology, and toxicology and explains the approach necessary to the solution of problems in engineering biotechnology. The basic procedure involved in the control of an occupational health hazard is explained, and the educational preparation required for this field of engineering is considered.
