Airport Standards

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 121, Issue 1

Abstract

Only by continuous cooperation between the airplane manufacturer and the airport operator can the airplanes that are being built be able to use the facilities at the various airports. Similarly, satisfactory liaison can enable the airport owner to anticipate the needs of the air-transport industry. Prominent among the mutual problems are the lengths of runways and the strengths of pavements; the runways cannot be excessively long nor can the pavements be too weak. Another problem, although not one of airport design, is the suppression of noise. The noise level at airports must be lowered if the public is to accept the industry as a commonplace activity.
