Abstract
This paper presents a working hypothesis to explain rationally the cause of, and remedy for, fatigue failures in structural joints and includes supporting evidence. It also presents a correlation of results of a number of fatigue tests of double-lap joints made in the United States and attempts to show that these results are explained by this hypothesis.
