Abstract
The determination of water volumes available for the dilution of sewage in tidal estuaries and the detention time of this sewage is often necessary in the formulation of pollution abatement projects. This paper presents information on the nature of tidal actions with emphasis on those aspects of interest to the sanitary engineer. Techniques used in determining dilution volumes and detention periods are discussed with the purpose of determining how these methods are in accord with accepted concepts of tidal flow.
