Abstract
Historic accounts of the Mississippi Valley and its river problems date back to the time of Hernando De Soto. Floods during the past century were disastrous, particularly because remedial measures were too difficult and expensive to secure support. Formation of the Mississippi River Commission was an important step, but the flood catastrophe of 1927 was the crowning influence—it caused adoption of a comprehensive flood-control plan. Under this, vast construction works have been effected—reservoirs, levees, cutoffs, revetments, floodways, and outlets. The story of the improvement and development of the Mississippi River for navigation and flood control during the past century is a significant chapter of achievement in the engineering history of the United States.
