Diversion Structures and Distribution Systems for Irrigation

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2

Abstract

Although simple diversions were the rule in early irrigation systems, the same general principles govern later, more elaborate developments. Experience has indicated the needs, and advances in science have dictated the solutions. As a result, provision has been made for fish migration, disposition of heavy bed load, and proper control of extra water or waste. Modern improvements and practice are described, with examples cited to illustrate engineering trends as applied not only to diversons but also to canals and pipe systems—covering a wide range of problems due to the variety of conditions met and limitations imposed in the western states.
