Status of Insect and Rodent Control in Public Health

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2

Abstract

Modern chemical compounds, which make possible the effective control of disease-carrying insects, have changed the course of man's effort to secure a more healthful environment. Effective residual spraying techniques are now widely used in public health work throughout the world. This paper reviews the toll taken by insect-borne disease before the modes of transmission were fully recognized and control measures adopted. World history was often vitally affected by the course of insect-borne epidemics. The rise of sanitation is described, and the pioneers in this field are mentioned in connection with their accomplishments.
