Water Supply and Treatment
Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2
Abstract
The history of water supply and treatment in the United States is an epic of constant progress and achievement. The paper reviews the development of water treatment from 1850, when there were only sixty-eight cities in the United States with planned water supplies, to 1952, when more than 15,500 urban supplies were in operation. Important phases in the rapid growth of water supply and treatment are described, and many early installations are mentioned. Among the treatment processes reviewed are filtration, sedimentation, chlorination, and fluoridation.
