Effect of Science on Structural Design

Abstract
Engineering progress in the field of structural design from the earliest times until the present is discussed in this paper. The art of design bas changed radically over the years until in some aspects it has now nearly become a science. Hundreds of projects are completed in a relatively short time today that each would have required a lifetime of work by a master builder of ancient times. The development of modern structural design techniques is traced through the ages. The influence of analysis on design is discussed, as well as the effect of experimentation. The place of standardization is explained, and the promise of the future is explored.
