Abstract
To appreciate fully the recent advances in the science of cartography it will be necessary to go back about 100 years and to describe briefly the map-making processes of that period. In the 1850's the western states were being opened up. Settlers were flocking to the rich prairie states, railroads and roads were being built, promoters were carrying on what is now referred to as a “land-office" business, and the demand for maps was unprecedented in the history of the country. Since then great strides have been made in the art of cartography.
