Abstract
The salient features of the diversion tunnel and power conduit of the Nantahala Hydroelectric Development, in North Carolina, constructed in 1940, 1941, and 1942, are described in this paper. The tunnel was used to carry the flow of the river during construction, and in the finished project provides emergency release from the reservoir. A· self-removing temporary closure gate was used. Permanent control is attained by narrow and long fixed-wheel gates operating in a rigid arrangement of guides and liner. An energy dissipator prevents damage to the unlined tunnel below the control gates.
