Abstract
An analytical basis is presented for determining the size and location of air-inlet valves in steel pipe lines in order to prevent their collapse due to external pressure. The allowable internal pressure for steel pipe shells is first computer from formulas published elsewhere for the collapse of cylindrical shells under external pressure. The conditions under which the hydraulic gradient may fall below atmospheric pressure at some points in the pipe line are then investigated and the size and location of air-inlet valves required to prevent the collapse of the pipe shell are determined on the basis of adiabatic expansion of air. Various charts are presented to facilitate the required computations.
