Abstract
For the most part this paper contains the description of a method for analyzing statically indeterminate flexural structures loaded beyond the elastic limit or structures comprising material that does not obey Hooke's law. The relations between the unit strains and the unit stresses (both normal and tangential), bending moments, angle changes, and deflections, produced under these circumstances, are derived. The effects of removing a load and of moving a load along the span are also considered. Furthermore, the method is applied to mild steel I-beams, and is illustrated by a number of examples bearing on the “Theory of Limit Design” presented by J. A. Van den Broek,2 M. ASCE. Brief discussion of this theory together with observations concerning its validity, based on the results obtained, is included in Section 18.
