Abstract

The design of a continuous frame usually involves a process of successive revisions and analyses, starting with an estimate of the stiffnesses of the various members. On the basis of the stresses obtained from an analysis of this structure, a preliminary design is made. The preliminary design is next analyzed, and it is usually found that some of the members are unnecessarily strong and some are deficient in strength. The designer then makes whatever changes seem appropriate in those members and reanalyses the structure. This process may have to be repeated several times before the design and the analysis are in agreement.
