Abstract
The reinforced-concrete rigid frame is subjected to two types of temperature stresses: (1) Those resulting from long-range, or seasonal, temperature changes, and (2) those resulting from the radiant heat of the sun.
The method of determining stresses caused by seasonal temperature changes has been well established, although designers differ in opinion as to the importance of these changes. The purpose of this paper is to present an analytical method of finding the moments at the knee and crown of a reinforced-concrete rigid frame subjected to the second type of temperature change-namely, that caused by radiant heat from the sun. In order to present numerical computations for a structure of known cross section, a two-span rigid frame highway bridge, previously designed for H-20 loading, was used. A rigid frame was selected because of the increasing popularity of this type of structure for railroad and highway grade-separation projects.
