Abstract

In studying the strength of initially straight struts, pin-supported at one end and laterally restrained at the other, loaded by a concentrated axial load at some intermediate point between the supports, it is desirable to know the effect of shearing forces on the critical load on the struts. This paper treats that problem. A general expression for buckling criteria is derived for struts of different but constant cross sections. A special case and an example is solved in detail comparing the strength of a latticed strut, considering shear effect, with a strut the strength of which is determined by bending considerations only.
