Abstract

A method of making a quantitative analysis of the hydrology of the Great Lakes, as illustrated by a detailed study of the hydrology of Lake Superior, is presented in this paper. Certain deductions are made, based on evidence from available data. By means of these deductions, values are obtained for the evaporation from the lake surface. Knowing the evaporation, the underground flow to the lake and the land losses can be computed. The validity of the method has been checked by evaporation experiments which are described in the companion paper of this Symposium. The conclusion reached is that the evaporation and the underground flow are greater, and the land losses are less, than the values that have been generally accepted.
