Relation of Street Thoroughfares to Other Arteries of Transportation

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 100, Issue 1

Abstract

The term, “artery of transportation,” is graphic, but the analogy to the arteries in the human body is not quite accurate. Physiologically, a n artery has the specific function of carrying the flow of blood and only that; it serves that function and only that function from the first day to the last; it does not compete with other elements of communication; and its u se is automatically co-ordinated with all other organs, and the flow through it is automatically and consistently controlled. An artery of transportation, on the contrary, has none of these qualities, although it should have them, and if and when city planning finally succeeds, it will have them.
