Abstract

The history of surveying and mapping is the history of civilization. A complete collection of maps would be the best kind of a record of man's activities on earth, but it would be a bulky volume. Just as all early industrial efforts were crude, so were early maps-some of them mere sketches that would not be a credit to a mod ern school boy. As civilization progressed, however, methods and instruments were improved and the art of surveying and mapping was developed to keep pace with man's need for more accurate records.
