Abstract
Until recent years little attention was paid to the possibility that masonry dams might be liable to uplift forces of considerable magnitude, resulting in a dangerous reduction of their factors of safety. When general interest in the subject was aroused finally, the line of attack chosen, save in a few sporadic cases, was to neutralize the uplift by additional masonry. It is the purpose of this paper to draw attention to another method, which has been somewhat foreshadowed by recent designs; namely, that of preventing the uplift, rather than neutralizing it.
