Abstract

The fundamental relations that determine the distortions produced in structures by internal strains may be stated in the mathematical language of the calculus and of geometry and in the engineering terminology of moment, shear, product of inertia, and moment of inertia. These theorems are, however, most readily correlated by use of the principle of virtual work. The paper restates this principle, emphasizing that the reactions to the imaginary external resistance are themselves purely imaginary and in no way necessarily related to the supports of the structure. It then illustrates in part the very broad application of the principle.
