Abstract
This paper reports investigations conducted by the Engineering Experiment Station of Purdue University in co-operation with the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads, and reviews the literature on the measurement of volume changes in Portland cements and concretes.
The primary purpose of the investigations was to m easure the maximum warping and surface deformatio ns produced in a concrete road slab as a result of a non-uniform distribut ion of moisture, to give a basis for estimating possible initial stresses. The tests also yield data of expansion and contraction of concrete, useful in the design of concrete structures.
