Abstract
The object of this paper is to present both the theoretical and the experimental treatments of a new type of shaft spillway for earth dams. Heretofore, shaft spillways seldom have been used and very little information concerning them seems to be available in published form.
The paper treats of the methods of hydraulic design for a large shaft spillway now under construction, the application of these methods to the design of a model of the spillway, and the hydraulic tests on this model, including a discussion of the results of the tests.
On the basis of the data herein submitted, this new type of shaft spillway has been adopted as the most satisfactory and economical construction in the case of a 200-ft. earth dam across a narrow valley, with steeply rising hills on both sides, and it is believed that the data not only justify this particular decision, but also indicate the suitability of the design for any high earth dam similarly located.
