Abstract
In the studies for the design of the flood prevention works of the Miami Conservancy District, the laws governing the flow of water through a contraction in an open channel assumed unusual importance. The available literature on the subject was uncertain and contradictory. To determine the true laws governing the phenomena, the writer carried on, during the summers of 1915 and 1916, a series of small-scale experiments. Although conditions growing out of the war prevented their completion, some interesting results were obtained, and it is believed that they throw considerable light on this little understood subject.
