Abstract
This paper is descriptive of the design and construction of a steel sheet-pile coffer-dam of unusual type. This dam, so far as known, is the highest on record. In outline the coffer-dam is a cellular steel sheet-pile structure, designed for a pressure head, of soft mud and water, of about 65 ft., having the cellular spaces filled with earth and clay to form the water seal, and held against the external pressure by an embankment of rip-rap or broken rock. All the steel sheet-piling forming the cellular spaces or “pockets” is in single pieces, many of which are more than 70 ft. long.
