Abstract

There has recently been completed, near Cleveland, Ohio, a concrete arch bridge having a clear main span of 280 ft. and a rise of 80 ft. The length of the structure over all is 708 ft. The roadway is 40 ft. wide, and is flanked by two 8-ft. footwalks. The structure was built by Cuyahoga County, over Rocky River, on Detroit Avenue, and connects the suburban villages of Lakewood and Rocky River. It will carry a double-track interurban railroad, and heavy vehicular traffic. The general design is quite similar to that of the Walnut Lane Bridge, at Philadelphia, but a radical departure from the usual methods was made in the construction, as steel, instead of timber centering, was used for the main arch.
