Performance of Baffled Chute with 90° Bend
Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 107, Issue 4
Abstract
The effects of a 90° bend on scour and splash in a baffled chute have been studied in a 1:12 model. The model design followed recommended United States Bureau of Reclamation practice except for the square bend. Various combinations of guide vanes and bend floor elevations were examined in 12-ft and 24-ft (3.7-m and 7.3m) wide chutes carrying 40 cfs/ft (3.7 m³/s/m). The simplest, plain, square bend caused 2.3 ft (0.7 m) more scour depth than does a standard, straight chute. The additional scour may be eliminated by using guide vanes or lowering the bend floor. Sever splash beyond the bend and lower chute walls may require slope protection.
