Air Retained in Pool by Plunging Water Jet

Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 106, Issue 10

Abstract

The volume of air retained in a receiving pool by plunging water jets of different characteristics was measured using an air concentration probe. The effect of jet diameter, height of fall, and turbulence intensity on the total volume of air in the stilling pool was investigated. The results showed the significance of the turbulence level of the jet on the total volume of air and the entrainment process within the pool. The minimum entrainment velocity and the disintegration length were found to depend on the degree of roughness of the falling jet. The results were correlated using a dimensionless plot and yielded a semi-empirical relationship between volume of air retained in the pool and other jet characteristics. These relationships can be used, within limitations, to estimate the volume of air retained in a stilling pool by a falling water jet.
