Dense Bottom Currents in Rotating Ocean
Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 106, Issue 8
Abstract
The dynamic equations for a steady dense bottom current on a gently sloping plane in a rotating ocean are outlined. The entrainment and the friction at the wall and the interface respectively are parameterized by making use of the findings for nonrotating dense bottom currents which are summarized. By introducing an appropriate nondimensional length scale, the equations have been solved to yield the discharge, velocity, density, depth, width, densimetric Froude number, etc. along the predicted curved path line of the current. The usefulness of the model is demonstrated by applying it to the Denmark Strait Overflow.
