Abstract

A two-dimensional buoyant jet discharged into a stratified fluid with no crossflow is considered. Two simple equations are developed which relate the maximum height of rise, Zm, to a stratification parameter and the jet-source flux of either momentum or buoyancy. Length scale analysis provides the form of the equations and determines the conditions when each equation applies. Coefficients, not provided by the length scale analysis, are estimated by integrating the integral equation of momentum from the jet origin to the point of zero memontum. Scale model tests verify the form of the equations for Zm and provide experimental values of the coeeficients.
