Using Suction to Minimize Sand-Bed Scour

Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 103, Issue 4

Abstract

An unprotected cylindrical pier was exposed to the erosive forces of unidirectional currents with superimposed waves traveling with or against the current. The same set of tests was repeated with a cylinder through which ground flow was pumped. Inducing suction through a cylinder placed in a sand bed greatly reduces scour and enhances stability. By sufficiently increasing the pumping rate, even the combined dislocating forces of waves and currents can be nullified.
