Abstract

The characteristics of check valves for sodium service are presented. Knowledge of the forward and reverse flow characteristics of a tilting-disk check valve as a function of disk angle and line Reynolds number can be used to predict pressure drops during normal operation and to estimate surge pressures during closure. Equations describing the general behavior of tilting disks and hydraulic dashpots are available to determine the dynamics of the disk. Experimental tests of tilting-disk valves can be reduced to measurement of single parameters to evaluate either the pressure drop or the fluid moment as a function of disk angle and Reynolds number. This paper has provided curves of these parameters for a particular valve geometry. However, these parameters can be used to estimate the bahavior of other tilting-disk check valves whose design does not grossly differ from the ones considered herein.
