Abstract

Effective operation and maintenance of the urban environment requires the coordinated management of the various elements that comprise the urban area. One of the principal elements of the urban system is that of water resource management which includes urban drainage and flood control. A systems engineering methodology was developed for master planning of the major drainage system in the Denver area under Project REUSE (Renewing the Environment through Urban Systems Engineering). The methodology incorporates a functional description of the urban drainage system, and a systematic process of data acquisition, runoff analysis, concept identification and selection, and master plan development and implementation.
