Linear Programming and Channel Flow Identification

Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 99, Issue 11

Abstract

A method is developed for the optimal identification of parameters in unsteady open channel flow. The parameters chosen for the identification are two constants embedded in the generalized friction slope expression which encompasses both the Manning and Chezy equations. A minimax error criterion is formulated and solution is obtained by the use of the influence coefficient algorithm and linear programming. The required information is a set of concurrent input and output measurements and appropriate initial and boundary conditions of the system. Numerical results are presented which demonstrate the efficiency of the formulation and the rapidity of the rate of convergence. The advantage of this approach is also considered.
