Abstract
Linearized Navier-Stokes equation, including the linear viscous terms, is considered in the investigation of the oscillatory wave forces on a vertical circular cylindrical structure. Stokes’ nonlinear gravity wave theory is applied in the analysis and expressions for the wave pressures and forces on the cylinder are derived. The effect of diffraction of waves due to the presence of the cylindrical object is included in the derivation. The relative importance of the higher order terms in the nonlinear wave components and the viscous terms is shown. The theory is compared with past test results on the inertia-predominant wave forces on a vertical cylindrical pile.
