Abstract

The linkage between stochastic and parametric hydrology models is investigated. Using autocorrelation analysis, it is shown how a conceptual unit hydrograph model consisting of n linear reservoirs in cascade leads to an autoregressive time series which may be used for generating synthetic streamflow. Thus, the stochastic model parameters are related to the storage characteristics of the basin. The theory is verified using Nash's data on the Ashbrook catchment and two floods in a Pennsylvania watershed.
