Appearance of Unstable Buoyant Jet

Abstract

The flow of a turbulent vertical plume in a stagnant ambient fluid of uniform density was examined theoretically and experimentally. It was shown that a real solution to the equations of motion exists when the densimetric Froude number exceeds a critical value. Below this value the experiments showed that the flow in the plume was laminar over a certain length. It was observed that this length decreased markedly with an increase of the jet Reynolds number and was accompanied by increase in dilution at the boil.
