Abstract
The technical biography of Henri de Pitot is presented with emphasis given to novel ideas he introduced in hydraulics at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Chief among the various aspects of hydraulics he was interested in are forces on immersed bodies, fluid resistance in rivers, forces acting on the hull and sails of a ship, theory of the Archimedes' Screw and his famous machine to measure velocity.
