Abstract
Daily evaporation was measured for sands that dry without contact with a water table. Selected sands from an ephemeral streambed were packed in cylinders, wetted, and weighed to determine evaporation loss under field climatic conditions. In summer and early fall tests, first-day evaporation from the sands was less than half the loss from an adjacent Class A Weather Bureau pan. During the first week, evaporation rates for the sands were lower than those reported for irrigated soil. The maximum depth of drying during the three-week tests was less than one foot.
