Abstract
Tidal hydraulics is currently defined to include all aspects of tidal waterways, not merely the rise and fall of the tide and the resultant tidal currents. The states of knowledge in the subdivisions of this broad field of engineering are analyzed, and the needs, if any, for new knowledge are determined. The principal subdivisions where there is insufficient information available are found to be: salinity intrusions; shoaling; and criteria for the design of channels for safe and economic navigation by ships. The nature of the research in these sub-divisions are described generally, the prospects for success are indicated, and the benefits are stated.
