Erosion from Suburban Highway Construction

Abstract
The extent to which earth materials may be eroded and transported in streamflow during a period of surface disturbance was studied in a drainage basin of 4.54 square miles in Fairfax County, Virginia, during 1961 and 1964. Scott Run, which empties into the Potomac River about six miles above the head of the Potomac Estuary, was the scene of extensive highway construction involving 6.8 miles of dual highways including five interchanges and covering about 11% of the basin. Urban construction of other types was minor in the basin during this time.
