Dispersion from Sources in Nonuniform Seepage Flow

Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 93, Issue 3

Abstract

The concentration distribution due to dispersion of contaminant from a line source or a point source in a nonuniform flow through a porous medium is found to be described by rather simple equations. Although these equations have been derived with a few approximations, comparison with accurate numerical solutions shows that these simple solutions are adequate for engineering purposes. Because of the variation of velocity and soil properties along the streamline of contamination, the maximum concentration at a cross-section is modified. And because of lateral velocity variation among the streamlines, the trail of contaminant is shifted away from the streamline of contamination. The distribution of concentration is not symmetrical in the trail. Examples of application of the solutions are presented.
